It is definitely not necessary (unless you are running competitions). I have been using change plates and had considered a wedge or mini jacks, but decided to go for the full jack since it will only be used at home.
The downside is size and storage. These things are not small.
I do want to start deadlifting twice a week and try to really bump up my max deadlift. While an 80# jump is unlikely, I think a 40# jump to 365# may be possible.
