2021
2021
Since 2010, I have managed to assemble a $7,637 home gym.
In 2010, I started with a $25 Cybex Flat Bench that I bought at a yard sale on a whim.
In 2015, I bought a beater bar to practice Crossfit movements at home and a Gymnastics Mat for my then 6 and 8 year old daughters. ($226)
In 2016, I cancelled my MBS membership and set out to supplement the Oracle Gym and bought bumper plates, a technique bar and plates, some Crossfit stuff (KB, plyo boxes, wall ball, climbing rope), sand bag and a GHD ($1,537)
In 2017, I added stall mats as I intended to train at home during days off so that I could still watch my then 8 and 10 year old daughters. ($165)
In 2019, I added some Atlas Stones, Parallettes and a Folding Rack as they showed up on sale and on secondary markets ($320)
In 2020, I sold the GHD, some standard plates and a kettlebell. I made a big investment due to the pandemic with new bumper plates and dumbbells, the Rower, some Crossfit stuff (pull-up bar, plate carrier and med balls), the Yoke, and some misc items (timer, silencer pads, squat box) (net $2,588)
In 2021, I just grabbed odds and ends that I found interesting. None of these items were essential to my training. I bought a 15kg barbell, some more stall mats, change plates and dumbbells. I also invested in a storage system and back extension. I grabbed some more weight, chains and accessories. Most recently I sold some dumbbells and my folding rack and purchased a new 20kg barbell ($1,786)
I did not plan any purchases for 2022, but came across a Hoist Ab Bench, dumbbells, a set of 24-18-12-6-3" Plyo Boxes (that are awesome), and some misc items. It is hard to believe I am already pushing $950 for the year.
From the humble beginning of a $25 Cybex Flat Bench, I have built up a reasonable array of powerlifting, Crossfit and Strongman equipment. I am a fitness enthusiast and I believe in the Crossfit methodology of stealing best practices whether they come from gymnastics, weightlifters, martial arts or anywhere else.
As odd as it may seem, I still have a short wish list of fitness items. I would like to get a set of SYQQ collars.

I have been performing strength and conditioning workouts since 1985 (at the ripe age of 14 years). My home gym started with a DP bench and 110# of standard iron plates. I bought some plastic encased concrete plates from yard sales. I had access to the Germantown High School weight room. My programming was from Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding.
Since that time, I have always owned a bicycle and a pair of running shoes. For the vast majority of the intervening years, I have had access to a commercial gym (Purdue, StorageTek, Sun, Oracle). My programming and technique was always a combination of bro science and the occasional article in Muscle and Fitness magazine. Since 2015 I have been smitten with the Crossfit methodology and have sought technique improvement and high intensity interval training.
